A. SECURITY AND ACCESS TO CAMPUS FACILITIES

Academic and administrative facilities are locked after business hours. Students and staff with access to buildings for after-hours work should make sure doors lock behind them after they enter and are encouraged to follow all personal safety precautions. If you are working alone at night in a campus building, be sure a friend knows where you are and when you’ll return home (if you don’t leave on schedule, remember to let your friend know).

Never prop open a secured door to a building or residence hall. If you see a propped door, close it. In the residence halls, don’t permit anyone other than your guest(s) to enter the building. If you see an unescorted male in a women’s residence hall, notify an RA or UAPD immediately.

B. CAMPUS LIGHTING

If you are walking on campus after dark, you should use the after-dark walking routes that can be found on the campus map. When possible, use the Crimson Ride to get to your destination or walk with a friend or in a group.

The University works to ensure that indoor and outdoor lighting on campus contributes to safety. If you see an outdoor light that isn’t working, report it to University Facilities at 205-348-6001.

Blue emergency phones can be found around campus.

C. EMERGENCY PHONES

More than 200 bright blue emergency phones have been placed around campus for safety. Each phone is clearly marked and provides a direct line to UAPD. No dialing is necessary. In an emergency, all you need to do is push the red button. Locations of the blue phones can be found on the campus map.

Most passenger elevators on campus have emergency lines that operate the same way as the blue emergency phones. Push the red button marked “Emergency” and a UAPD communications operator will answer.

D. ADVISORIES

When the University becomes aware of a situation that poses an imminent, ongoing, criminal threat to the University community, UAPD releases information in the form of an advisory, also known as a timely warning. Students and employees are notified of advisories via email. All advisories are posted on the advisory page of the UAPD website.

E. WEAPONS POLICY ON CAMPUS

Illegal or unauthorized possession of firearms, ammunition, explosives, other weapons or dangerous chemicals on University property is a violation of the UA Dangerous Weapons & Firearms Policy. Anyone who is found to be in violation of this policy may be removed from campus and receive a written directive to remain off campus. Students who violate this policy will be addressed in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct as well as other applicable policies and may include sanctions, up to and including expulsion. Employee violations may be resolved in accordance with employer policies, up to and including termination.
